One of the saddest impacts of the current pandemic and the resulting difficult economic situation is the steep rise in urban poverty in the Klang Valley. With the very real tragedy of covid deaths of some bread winners coupled with job losses for others, many families in the Klang Valley live in squalor, and simply have no source of income and need assistance. Pertubuhan Kebajikan Baitul Hasan Kuala Lumpur, a foundation established in 2013 by Ustaz Dino Rizal Suratman was set up with the objective of helping such families in a range of activities – from education to scholarships, back-to-school expenses for the children, to medical and food aid. On August 6th 2021, Free Food Society (FFS) teamed up with Ustaz Dino (himself a covid-19 survivor) and Pertubuhan Kebajikan Baitul Hasan to provide grocery items to 100 asnaf families affected by covid 19 under their Jom Bantu Asnaf Covid 19 Initiative. A list of 100 families – all of them asnaf, some with family members who are disabled – living in Kampung Pasir, PPR Pantai Permai, PPR Pantai Ria, Kampung Limau, PPR Sri Cempaka, Pantai Dalam and many other PPR communities in the Old Klang Road area was selected to be recipients of FFS food aid. The food aid comprised 100 food parcels donated by Jaya Grocer. FFS also added other essential items such as sugar, flour, cream crackers and tea. In accordance with strict SOPs, one representative from each family collected the food packs from Baitul Hasan. FFS would like to thank Jaya Grocer for their support and Ustaz Dino of Baitul Hasan for the smooth execution of the food aid to the community.
